Family Outdoor Play Day
Sunday 14th Feb 1 - 4pm

St Valentines Day is a good time to spend with those you love.  Why not spend a few hours in the natural setting of Chyan, making things, drinking tea and trying your hand at a new skill.

We will have artists helping everyone to work on live willow sculptures and showing children and adults how to make willow hearts on sticks to take home.  Den building materials will be provided for you to play with, or you can try producing artwork with natural materials (from charcoal, to earth and berry juice).

Come and see the community allotments and wind turbines and find out more about Chyan and how you can use it.  There is a covered area and tea and cake will be on sale, so come and enjoy.

Booking is helpful, but not essential.  Please call Cathy on 01326 219293

£1.50 per child or Free to members.

Wind Turbine Open Day
Saturday 30th January

Festivities for Imbolc – the ancient Celtic tradition to mark the start of Spring, will coincide with celebrations for the launch of a community based renewable energy project near Penryn at the end of the month.

From 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 30th January, The Chyan Community Field at Halvasso will be welcoming anyone with an interest in sustainable living to visit their two acre site to see the first stage of the development of the project’s wind garden.

* Opening of two 6k wind turbines
* Willow sculpture workshops
* Windmill crafts for kids
* Fire for Imbolc spring celebration
* Hot drinks and food

Come to Chyan Community Field to enjoy willow sculpture, children’s windmill crafts, grand opening of Chy-ans’ own wind turbines and a fire to celebrate the festival of Imbolc, welcoming the first signs of local spring and the increasing presence of the sun in our lives and on our land.

Why not leave your car behind and come cycle the way to Chyan? A group will be leaving Falmouth Moor at 1pm (Please bring lights).

Our aims are to involve local environmentalists, community groups, farmers and gardeners, old and young, to develop their own permaculture projects and enjoy the land.

All are Welcome!

Two 6kW turbines were installed just before Christmas to meet all of the site’s current and future power needs and take centre stage within the developing ‘wind garden’. Over the coming months the project will choose designs for seven separate ‘wind art’ installations which, when funded and built, will join the turbines to create a unique and interactive educational resource.

With the help of Cornwall’s award winning sustainable energy and energy efficiency charity Community Energy Plus, the Chyan Community Field project secured just over £28,000 from both EDF Energy and DECC’s Low Carbon Buildings Programme to fund the wind turbines.

During the open afternoon, sustainable energy experts from Community Energy Plus will be on hand to provide tours of the wind turbines and discuss renewable technology and funding opportunities.

Inspired by the wind turbines, children will be able to make windmills and wind instruments and there will be a hands-on willow sculpture session for adults to explore their creativity. The celebrations for Imbolc – the start of spring, will also include a fire juggling performance and poetry recital.

Neil Farrington from Community Energy Plus said: “The Chyan Community Field Project brings together a group of people who are passionate about sustainable living and encouraging others to reduce their impact on the environment. Community Energy Plus is committed to delivering local energy efficiency and sustainable energy advice to reduce fuel poverty and the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change and we have been delighted to work with Chyan to enable them to generate their own energy and become a resource for other community projects and individuals with an interest in renewables.”

Chyan founder Brett Jackson said: “Since starting the project in 2002 we have transformed an empty overgrown field into an inspirational green space where the local community can learn about growing food and the environment. The wind turbines are an important part of making the project truly sustainable but will also enable us to sell excess energy to the National Grid, providing a valuable source of income to help the project achieve its ambitions.”

Entry to the family fun afternoon on Saturday 30th January is free, although there will be a small charge to cover materials for craft activities.
